International driving licence

Motorists driving abroad may need an international driving licence. Find out if you need one and how to obtain one in Switzerland.

The international driving licence serves as a translation of the national licence for driving abroad. It is valid only in conjunction with your national driving licence. You must therefore always present both valid documents at the same time.

If you have a Swiss driving licence

An international driving licence is recommended for driving in all countries outside the EU and EFTA. Some countries and many car rental services even require it.
Before travelling abroad, check with your travel agent, the relevant consulate or a road transport association to find out what travel documents you need for the country in question.
For driving in EU and EFTA countries, a Swiss credit-card format driving licence is sufficient. If you still have an old blue licence, you can easily replace it with a new one from your cantonal vehicle licensing office.

Si vous avez un permis de conduire étranger

Si vous vivez à l’étranger, vous avez besoin d’un permis international pour conduire en Suisse seulement si votre permis de conduire étranger ne mentionne pas en caractères latins les catégories de véhicules autorisés.

You can order an international driving licence from the vehicle licensing office in the canton where you live.

In some cantons, you can also contact the Automobile Club de Suisse or the Touring Club Suisse. These associations can also provide information on the documents required.

The international driving licence is valid for three years, but not beyond the expiry date of the national driving licence.
You cannot have your international driving licence extended, but you can order a new one if it expires.
The price of a Swiss international driving licence varies from canton to canton. You should expect to pay a few dozen francs.

Change of driving licence

Swiss driving licences generally do not have an expiry date, but you must apply for a new one if it is lost or stolen, for example. Instructions on how to change your licence and obtain a credit-card-sized version.

Your licence has gone missing

If your driving licence is lost or stolen, you must have a new one issued.

Information is no longer valid

As soon as any of the information on your licence is no longer valid, you need a new licence. Think about this, for example, if you change your name or give up a licence category.
If you still have a blue paper licence, you must also apply for a new one if your address changes. This is not necessary if you already have a credit-card format licence.
You can obtain more detailed information from your cantonal motor vehicle department.

Drivers who still have a blue paper licence

The blue paper licence is valid until 31 October 2024. Drivers who still have a blue paper licence need to exchange it for a credit-card format licence by that date at the latest. After that, paper driving licences will no longer be valid as proof of the right to drive.

If your Swiss driving licence has been stolen, you must report the theft to a police station.
Then contact the cantonal motor vehicle department, which will issue you with a duplicate authorising you to drive until you receive your new licence.
Once a new licence has been issued, the old one is no longer valid. If you find your lost or stolen licence, please return it to the Service des automobiles with an explanatory note.

You should contact the Vehicle Licensing Office in your canton of residence. The licence will be sent to you by post within one to two weeks. The cost of changing your driving licence varies from canton to canton. You should expect to pay several dozen francs for a duplicate or an update. If you need to exchange a foreign licence, the bill will probably exceed CHF 100.
