Changing your driving licence

International driving licence

How do you exchange your foreign driving licence when you move to Switzerland?
When you arrive in Switzerland, you can drive for 12 months with your foreign driving licence. After that, you must have a Swiss driving licence.
Procedures vary depending on the country where the foreign licence was issued. However, you must present your original driving licence and take a sight test.
EU and EEA countries
If you have a driving licence from an EU or EEA country (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway), you will be issued with a Swiss driving licence without any further checks on your fitness to drive. Your foreign licence will be returned to the issuing authority.
Other countries
To exchange a licence issued in another country, you must prove that you are fit to drive.
